Fashion and Beauty of 2016
This year was great for new fashion and make up looks, as well as trends being brought back from the past. Fabrics and colours were used once again in 2016s popular fashion and beauty trends.
Clothes
Hands down my favourite item to wear in the spring and autumn of 2016 was a pinafore dress. It is the perfect in between item of clothing. In England, spring and autumn are cold, but occasionally can be quite warm. A pinafore dress can be worn with tights and a thick top underneath for the colder days and for the warmer days it can be worn bare-legged with a light-weight top underneath.
Throughout the year of 2016 I worn ripped jeans. I varied from jeans with subtle rips, to jeans which had more holes than fabric! England, overall has a cold climate and ripped jeans are perfect to wear all year round. [Of course when the sun did shine in the summer, I converted to ripped shorts!]
In the autumn of 2016 there was a popular trend of wearing sweater dresses or oversized sweaters. I personally loved this trend because it could be worn as part of a casual outfit or as a going out outfit. My favourite way of wearing the sweater dress is to pair it with some tights and knee high boots.
In the spring and autumn, it is often too warm to wear thick winter coats, but too cold to not wear anything at all. A trend that I loved in 2016 was to wear a bomber jacket. This was first a trend in the 1950s and was brought back in 2016. However they were worn way before then in World War 1 as part of the army uniform. Bomber jackets can be worn with a hoodie or jumper under it for extra warmth for those typical English [cold] days.
In the warmer days in the summer of 2016, a style of clothing that I saw everybody wear was off-the-shoulder clothes. I saw dresses, tops, and playsuits/bodysuits which all had off-the-shoulders. It can be worn to a meal or a night out, or during the day. However, if it becomes chilly during the day, it is very uncomfortable to wear a jacket over the top and it is not very practical as your arms are restricted in terms of movement.
Shoes
Now, what about those bad boys down there? Yes 2016s shoe trends! 2016 brought back the trend of boots; angle boots, knee high boots, mid rise boots. My favourite boots that I worn in 2016, were a pair of black patent chelsea boots with a small heel. I love the fact that they can be dressed up, with a dress for a night out, or dressed down, with a pair of jeans and a cashmere coat. They are perfect for spring, autumn and winter.
As I mentioned before knee high boots were another trend of 2016. They were the ultimate shoes to be paired with a sweater dress. However, these boots also go flawlessly with a more everyday outfit; a pair of jeans and top.
Accessories
In 2016, there was a great trend of chokers. There were many different styles of choker; different widths, fabrics, and designs. My favourite choker that I saw in 2016 were the wrap around chokers, where you wrap a thin band of fabric around your neck a few times and tie it off with a bow at the front and the excess fabric hangs down over your chest. I love pairing this choker with tops that have lower-cut necks. If you wear it with a top which has a higher neck it can make you look as if you do not have a neck at all!
In 2016 it was very popular to add to the classic pieces of clothing that can be a little plain. Shops started selling jackets and hats with patches on which gave the clothes more personality. They varied from one patch on the front pocket, to patches covering almost all of the fabric of the jacket. My favourite patched jacket that I wore in 2016 was a blue denim jacket which has patches that are Disney characters. On the front there was a patch with the word 'Mickey' and of the sleeve was mickeys head and on the back of the jacket their were the heads of the most iconic characters, Mickey, Minnie and Donald as well as mickeys hand. It is two of my favourite things put together; Disney and fashion!
Make Up
The overall make up look of 2016 was called the 'no make up, make up look'. It was very natural and made people feel like they were rocking their own skin.
This was the year of matte lips. In 2016 Kylie Jenner launched her own line of cosmetics. It started off with a few shades of matte liquid lipsticks and a few shades of glosses, with lip liners to match. All most every girl and boy who were interested in make up wanted to get their hands on one. I was fortunate to be able to purchase a few mattes and glosses from her website and I was in love! Later in 2016, Kylie came out with more shades as well as eyeliners, eyeshadow palettes and single eyeshadows.
However, we did step up the game when it came to brows and strayed away from the natural theme. In 2016, it was all the rage to have big, bold brows. People got their brows shaped, tinted, tattooed, and micro bladed [which was very popular in 2016].
Now for contouring. This was a very popular trend of 2016. People were contouring from their cheek bones to their chest! It was also very popular to try out hacks where they contoured using kitchen utensils! People were enhancing their features brighting the high points with highlighter and contouring to give a shadow, to intensify the definition.
The last trend of 2016 that I will be sharing with you is the use of highlighter. People went all out with creams, and liquids and powers to highlight their cheekbones. They wanted their highlight to be poppin'! The shades ranged from champagnes to silvers to rainbows! People even began to create their own highlighters, using eyeshadows.
I hope you all had a wonderful 2016 and I hope your 2017 is even better!

In terms of shades for 2016, the trend was to stick to nudes, if it be pinky nudes or more dark, brown toned nudes. People carried the no make up trend along and kept their lips and eyeshadow natural as well. All year I have been wearing nude lips and eyes, varying them slightly depending on the season. In spring and summer I wore pale pinky nudes and as it slowly slid into autumn and winter I evolved into dark brown toned nudes.
